What is hypnosis? What is hypnotherapy and hypnotism?
Hypnosis is a completely natural and safe state that we enter into daily. Hypnosis allows us to access our deeper part of mind, the subconscious, where all our habits, beliefs, behaviours, and feelings are stored.
Some people know it as ‘flow’ or ‘in the zone’, or we find ourselves there when we are focused on a book, deadline, or enjoyable activity when time goes by without our being aware of it. If you’ve ever been caught up in the plot of a movie, you’ve experienced hypnosis – where the story may not be real, but we suspend our disbelief so that we get involved in this created reality.
Hypnotherapy or hypnotism allows us to help our clients create access to the subconscious mind ‘on demand’ to assist them in making the changes the need and want in their lives. As a complementary therapy, we help everyday people with everyday problems. This is a consensual state where client and therapist work together to help transform thoughts, feelings and behavior in ways that work better for the client.
How can Hypnosis help people?
Hypnosis can help people in a number of ways. Some of the most popular services that we deal with are:
- Behaviour/Habit Change (weight loss, stop smoking, alcohol, nail biting, disorganization, gambling etc.),
• Financial (success, abundance),
• Stress Reduction (sleep issues, worry, depression, panic, stress related health),
• Educational Enhancement (memory, test taking, spelling, mental blocks etc.),
• Emotional Release (jealousy, anger, grief),
• Sexual Issues (impotence, dysfunction, premature ejaculation, relationships, childbirth)
• Removing/reducing fears (flying, heights, public speaking, night terrors etc.),
• Sports enhancement (fitness, confidence, skills development, concentration, competition, motivation – personal/teams)
A growing area is Corporate or Executive Services (success, sales, self-confidence, drive, change, writing and communications, creativity etc.), which can be done on a one-to-one basis or within a group.
Issues that are medically related (pain, chronic, migraines, arthritis/joint pain, healing, skin conditions) require a medical professional’s referral – hypnosis works with the medical community, not against it.
There are other areas that aren’t mentioned – remember, on the whole we work with everyday people with everyday problems to assist them in living life with greater health and happiness, and more grace and ease.
We look at it simply:
Work. Play. Love. Live. Better.

What materials are included and how can I access them?
You’ll be getting a lot of material in different forms so that you have what you need to help you through the whole course and beyond. We will be using different learning platforms to give you the best experience. Much of the course material will be accessible or downloadable off the platforms and we will keep you in the loop for any changes.
Online Course Materials Package:
You will be accessing much of your material online (instructions on downloading to follow) during the course, so you’ll be able to collect the information as you need it during your studies. Some of the material will be referred to during the class sessions, while others are reference information for your personal and professional development.
Online Course Material available to you online includes:
Videos for 10-Day Course: Each day will be made up of video files you can download to your computer. Each day is, for the most part, made up of four video parts ranging in length between 1.5 and 2 hours (except for Day 8 with three files and Day 10 with two). These videos will make up the bulk of your “classroom” time. Client case studies are included in these videos.
Manuals and Scripts: Material from the National Guild of Hypnotists will be accessible on the training portal. You can download it as a soft copy or print some when you need it.
Tests and Handouts: You will have ten day files which include a number of PDF handouts as well as your comprehension ‘tests’ (to make sure you’re keep up with the class). Some ‘days’ will have more additional material than others. Please print or access these so you can follow along with the class. Before scheduling your skype session, fill in and send the comprehension test to your instructor.
Hypnosis Explained: This can be your “Pre-Talk Video” you use with clients. We’ll be going over all the aspects mentioned in this introduction to hypnosis and the mind during your first day of class and you can continue to use it once you are doing the work upon graduation. This video is less than 20 minutes long.
Supplementary Videos: In addition to your classroom time, you also have hours of bonus material to supplement the course. These include classroom examples of therapy, media clips, and student practice and presentations. These additional hours are not required for the course, but are strongly recommended so that you have additional insight and more of a perspective and experience in the “classroom setting”.
Articles: This data file includes three folders. “Hypnosis and Media” include articles written by your instructor or written about hypnosis. They can be printed out and used to support your clients in understanding more about hypnosis as well as reassuring them that this is a well publicised, helpful field. “Research Articles” has collected together a number of research papers done on aspects of hypnosis in the scientific community. The “Articles on Mind and Client Issues folder” includes articles with relevant subjects for hypnotists – these are the areas our clients will need help with. Look them over to get a different perspective on areas of focus you might be interested in while doing this work.
Self-Hypnosis Deepening Track: When you learn self-hypnosis during the course, there will be a suggestion that you listen to a deepening audio. This audio will help deepen your practice of self-hypnosis and can be used in supporting clients in their self-hypnosis practice as well. This audio is about 12 minutes long.
Hypnosis Audios: For your reference, you have a number of examples of hypnosis subject areas recorded. These audios will give you an idea of what you can do to support your clients with direct suggestion recordings. You have been provided with recordings on weight release, dry bed practice, secret weapon introductions (explaining how hypnosis can help change), clearing mental closets, and hypnoparenting support.
Add to all this your skype sessions with your instructor and you have all the material you need for the course.
What certifications do I get?
Upon successful completion of the course, you will be eligible as a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) as a Consulting Hypnotist or Hypnotherapist (depending on your location). You will also receive a Master Hypnotist certification with Grey Matter Network LLC
Grey Matter Network supports their certified graduates after the class (whether on-site or home study) through continuing professional development. Certification is just the start to a lifetime of practice and learning!
What’s the difference between a Hypnotherapist and a Consulting Hypnotist?
This is something we’ll discuss once we’ve started the course. The difference between the label of Hypnotherapist, Hypnotist and Consulting Hypnotist is one that is followed due to local legal restrictions of occupational names. No matter the final name, our high-quality and thorough training is the same for all.
How long does the course take?
The timing of the course is up to you. While it could be done in as little as 10 days, our hybrid class with occur over a period of 10 weeks, so that’s approximately one day per week – usually accessible with busy people. We have had students whose schedules have been upturned by major events in their lives, which is understandable and workable within the training structure.
What are the advantages of the Hypnotherapy Home Study course?
You have control over your time. You can work through the program as quickly or as slowly as you need. You can work around the other important things in your life. This is a course that works on YOUR schedule.
You can learn anywhere. Wherever you choose to watch the videos and practice, you can do it. If you have a busy travelling schedule, you can bring your classroom with you. You can meet your instructor wherever you are at the time.
This flexibility allows you to be in charge of your time and location – two areas that you’ll continue to have control over once you have successfully graduated from this class.
What are the challenges of the Home Study program?
The Hypnotherapy Home Study program is for a special sort of person. There is a certain amount of self-direction required as you won’t be part of a group and will need to set your own schedule. While you’ll be working with your instructor throughout the entire process, you’ll be in charge of keeping track of your own hours and schedule appointments when you are finished each day. For the practice component you’ll need to find your own volunteers – usually that’s quite easy as once people know you’re learning hypnosis you might have a line of people who want to be your next ‘victim’! Wherever Grey Matter Network has graduates, we’ll connect you with the network of helpful and supportive therapist for you to practice even more.
How do I watch the online videos?
You will need a monitor with sound so that you can watch the classes. This is where you have flexibility to use your time in a way that suits you best. Videos are generally segmented in 1.5-2 hour sections, so you can watch part of one at a time, a complete segment for a couple hours or watch the whole ‘day’ in one go. While you are watching the videos you will have accompanying material that comes from the additional digital material – both textbook as well as handouts that you’ve downloaded.
For each day there will be a comprehension ‘test’ that shows you have watched the whole day – this needs to be submitted when arranging for your one-to-one session with your instructor
Who do I practice on?
Practice is an important part of the class and there will be ‘assignments’ where you need to find someone to work with. While you can practice on ‘invisible’ clients (and practicing processes yourself is a great idea to build up muscle memory), you’ll get more immediate feedback from another person.
Usually when our students mention that they are taking this course, friends and family will line up to be ‘practiced’ on, so finding volunteers has never been a problem with home study students to date. Because of our wide network of hypnotherapist and consulting hypnotists around the world, should there be a Grey Matter Network graduate in your area, you will have an opportunity to connect with them – these grads are not only successful but generous as well.
How do I schedule one-to-one Sessions?
Once you have completed watching each ‘Day’ and have completed and sent in your comprehension test for that day, it is time to schedule in your online session.
We usually do sessions with zoom but this may change with your accessibility and comfort level.
You will contact your instructor prior to the session so we can make connection and arrange for a time to chat.
Usually the session will last about an hour. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions, go over parts of the class that may need further explanation, review your experiences, and assess your progress. If you have recorded any ‘sessions’ on video or audio, please send them before the session so there is time for review before we meet.
What will I be able to do with hypnosis after this course?
Our goal is to give you the tools you need to help a wide variety of issues for individuals and groups using hypnosis. Many of our graduates start businesses that focus on Hypnotherapy and Hypnotism in their home town – while many choose to work full time, others can select their hours to work around other priorities in their lives, because this work allows for you to designate the amount of time you’ll allocate to working in this field. Others add the power of the subconscious mind to their existing careers to augment their tools and resources.
For a list of areas that hypnosis can help with, look to the question “how hypnosis can help”
“I need something that can move with me (once we’re allowed to move) – across the country and around the world.”
This is a very portable skill. We have seen graduates re-establish themselves in different parts of the world and have experienced fantastic success in their new ‘homes’. You instructor has trained and worked in dozens of countries over the years. The key component for doing this work is in your mind, which can move with you wherever you may find yourself.
“I’m at a crossroads in my life – I need a new path but don’t want to start from the beginning”
You have life experience, you’ve been on another path that has brought you here. We respect your earlier training and learning and want to help you leverage your understanding and insight to redirect you in a way that works best for you.
With hypnosis you can jump start a new career, yet use the expertise you have already attained to create a seamless transition or shift. We’ve had graduates in education focus on students and parents through hypnosis, mental health practitioners who have shifted their focus of support through hypnotherapy, and various other occupational shifts that have used a combined strength to create value and proficiency for a renewed career.
Because you can continue with your work while studying for your new direction, it’s even easier.
“I want to have more influence in my current work, and include the power of hypnosis in what I’m doing now.”
Understanding and using the power of the mind is one of the most basic yet potent skills you’ll learn during the course. If you are currently working in another field, hypnosis can complement the work you’re already doing. Whether it is to boost your own energy, focus, calm or performance, or you use it to support others within the workplace, colleagues, customers or clients, hypnosis can promote your influence and be a professional asset now and into the future.
Many of our graduates work in other areas of expertise – in the medical and mental health professions, education and training, in sales, marketing and media fields and more. The skills learned in this course are instantly transferable to other fields and specialist areas.
“I’m looking for meaningful work but need to consider my family right now.”
There are times in your life where you want to focus on your nearest and dearest and having a full-time job without any control over your location or time can seem contrary to that goal. Learning Hypnotherapy with the Home Study course is just the start to understanding the power you have over your time and freedom in the future.
Once you have successfully graduated from the course, you can create the hours you need and want in your practice that best suit the other important aspects of your life. Flexibility is one of the strengths of working in the field of hypnosis.
Do I have to do the days in order?
The course builds on previous knowledge learned in earlier days, so we request that days are done in sequential order.
What is the investment in this course?
The investment for the complete program is only US$1996– this is well below the cost of in-class training of this caliber. We know how hard it is with the pandemic and want the class to be accessible. There are lots of people who need support through hypnosis now and into the future. Many students have recouped the cost of this course within a few months of practice. Our goal is to give you the skills and information you need to succeed.
You will also invest your time and energy to get the most out of this program. You get out what you put in.
Do I need a degree to take this course?
No. A degree is not needed for this course. We will give you the basics of hypnosis and the mind and move through more advanced therapeutic methods during the course. If you do have a focus, life experiences or a degree, there are usually ways of applying this previous know-how to the work you’ll be doing in the course. Upon successful completion of the course you’ll be awarded membership into the Grey Matter Network International “Family” of therapists.
